Who says an incredible scuba holiday has to come with a luxury resort price tag?

In August 2026, we hosted our first-ever budget-friendly Roatán dive trip, trading some of the extras of an island resort for more time underwater and a more affordable Caribbean getaway.

With 17 dives, homemade Honduran meals, a cozy hotel tucked into the mangroves, and plenty of opportunities to explore the island, this trip delivered everything we love about diving Roatán.

How to Dive Roatan on a Budget

For this trip, we partnered with the same local businesses we work with for our Scuba MAR Maids Dive School retreats.

Instead of staying at a large beachfront resort, our group settled into a small, simple hotel tucked into the mangroves of Roatán.

It wasn’t fancy, and that was the point!

By keeping our accommodation simple and working with trusted local partners, we were able to offer a week of diving, meals, and accommodation at a much more accessible price.

Our Honduran hosts prepared three homemade meals a day around our dive schedule, which we enjoyed family-style around a long table beneath massive trees.

Our little home in the mangroves became the heart of the trip.

Even with 16 guests and two trip leaders, it felt intimate. Everyone came together over meals to share stories, compare marine life sightings, and make plans for the afternoon.

Scuba Diving in Roatán

Dive Challenge Level: 🔵Low

Roatán is one of our favourite destinations for relaxed Caribbean diving.

Warm water, generally excellent visibility, and typically mild currents make it a fantastic place for newer Open Water divers to build confidence.

But there’s plenty to keep experienced divers entertained, too!

Our itinerary included 17 dives over six days, with three dives planned most days, including two night dives. We schedule this trip right after our scuba training retreat to give our divers a chance to practice their new skills on some fun dives!

We divided the group into two boats based on experience and confidence levels.

This meant newer divers could take their time, practice their skills, and get comfortable underwater, while more experienced divers could enjoy deeper, more adventurous dives suited to their abilities.

Everyone had the opportunity to dive with people at a similar level, learn from each other, and then come together afterward to share their experiences.

Learning to Spot Roatán’s Marine Life

We had an extra advantage on this trip: our trip leader, Shev, had previously lived and worked in Roatán.

On our first evening, she hosted a short fish identification workshop to introduce the group to some of the unique marine life found around the island.

Armed with our Caribbean reef identification guides, we spent the week looking a little closer at the reefs.

Instead of just enjoying the colourful fish swimming past, we challenged ourselves to identify what we were seeing.

It’s amazing how much more you notice underwater when you start recognizing the creatures that call the reef home!

Exploring Roatán Between Dives

Even with three dives a day, we managed to squeeze in a little island exploration.

After our final dive, everyone could choose between relaxing at the lodge or heading out to discover more of Roatán.

Some of our adventures included visiting the famous white-sand beach at West Bay, exploring the restaurants and shops of West End, discovering local chocolate makers and handmade artisan shops, and taking a mangrove tour on the island’s East End.

Having a local trip leader who knew the island made it easy to experience more than just the dive sites.

On our final evening, we headed into town for a proper celebration, visiting local favourites including Pura Vida, Sundowners, and Seawiches.

After a week of homemade meals and early dive mornings, it was a fun way to wrap up our Caribbean adventure.

The People Who Make an MHT Trip Special

One of the things we love most about group dive travel is watching strangers become friends.

This trip brought together 16 divers with different backgrounds, experience levels, and reasons for travelling. And for more than half the group, this was their FIRST trip with MHT!

Even though we split into two boats each morning, the group stayed connected through our shared meals, afternoon adventures, and evenings together.

We also welcomed Madi, our newest MHT Ambassador, who joined the trip to train alongside Shev.

It was wonderful getting to know her and watching her grow into her new role as a future trip leader.

By the end of the week, we had another wonderful group of dive buddies and plenty of memories to take home.

Why Dive Roatán with MHT?

Our budget Roatán trip was designed around a simple idea: more diving, less luxury, and the same MHT community.

We took care of the accommodation, meals, airport transfers, diving, and group logistics, making it easy for guests to enjoy a week on the island without the price of a traditional dive resort.

Our local partnerships also meant we could offer an authentic experience while supporting the businesses and families who make Roatán such a special place.

Whether you’re travelling solo, looking for your first dive trip after certification, or simply want an affordable week packed with Caribbean diving, this style of trip offers something special.

As a bonus, we have a great partnership with a local photographer on the island. He joins us for a day of diving and captures memories for us above and below the water!

Is a Roatán Dive Trip Right for You?

Roatán is one of the best destinations in our lineup for newer divers.

With typically easy conditions, plenty of marine life, and beautiful reefs, it’s a wonderful place to gain experience after completing your Open Water certification.

A dive-heavy trip like this is great preparation to test your body for future liveaboards, where you’ll be diving multiple times a day.

And if you love the idea of exploring a destination beyond the resort, Roatán offers plenty of opportunities to experience local food, culture, and island life.

Our first budget-friendly Roatán adventure reminded us that the magic of an MHT trip isn’t about luxury accommodation.

It’s about great diving, meaningful friendships, and sharing incredible places with people who love the ocean as much as we do.
