Roatán will always have a special place in the history of Scuba MAR Maids Dive School.
It’s where we hosted our very first scuba training retreat back in June 2024! And this August, we returned for our sixth retreat with our friends at Octopus Dive School.
Eleven women joined us to learn new skills, earn certifications, and become more confident divers. Everyone came with a different story, different goals, and their own reasons for stepping outside their comfort zone.

About Our Roatán Scuba Training Retreats
Our Roatán retreats combine three intensive days of scuba training with afternoon workshops, homemade meals, and a little time to explore the island.
Unlike our Tulum retreats, where we focus on cenote training, Roatán gives students the opportunity to develop their skills in warm Caribbean waters, surrounded by beautiful coral reefs.
We stay at a cozy, locally owned hotel tucked into the mangroves, just a short distance from Octopus Dive School.
Having the dive shop nearby, rather than onsite, gives us a nice balance. We head out for our morning training, then return to our little home in the mangroves for lunch, workshops, and downtime.
And the food deserves its own mention!
Our Honduran hosts prepared three homemade meals every day, accommodating everyone’s allergies and dietary preferences.
We eat family-style around a long outdoor table beneath the trees. Even with our busy training schedule, there was always a fresh meal waiting for us.
It’s the perfect place to relax, refuel, and talk about everything we learned that morning.

Scuba Training in Roatán
Our August retreat included four Open Water students, six Advanced Open Water students, and one Rescue Diver.
For three days, mornings are dedicated to getting in the water.
Our Open Water students spend their first day in the pool, learning and practicing their brand-new scuba skills before progressing to the ocean.
Meanwhile, the Advanced and Rescue students head out on the dive boat to work on their own training.
One of the trademarks of the Scuba MAR Maids Dive School is that we don’t just teach students how to complete the required skills.
We teach them how to think like divers.
For our Advanced Open Water students, that starts with an hour-long conversation about expanding their awareness underwater.
We review buddy checks, equipment checks, diver responsibilities, and the questions every diver should feel comfortable asking their dive guide.
These are the skills that help divers become more independent, confident, and prepared for whatever the ocean throws at them.
Learning Beyond the Certifications
After a morning in the water, we return to the hotel for a homemade lunch, a shower, and a little downtime before our afternoon workshops.
Each day, we explore topics that aren’t always covered in a traditional scuba course.
We talk about:
- Diver safety and responsibility
- Different types of scuba equipment for different types of diving
- Fish identification and understanding more of what we’re seeing underwater
These workshops are a huge part of what makes our retreats different.
We want our students to leave with more than a certification card. We want them to understand their equipment, recognize potential problems, and feel confident making decisions underwater.

Life in Roatán: Beyond the Training
Our retreats are busy, but we always try to leave a little room for fun!
Staying near West End means we can easily explore the local restaurants, shops, and beautiful bays whenever we have free time.
After our workshops, we would adventure out to explore the beaches, shops, and local vibe of Roatan. After all, we’ve come all this way!
This group was especially wonderful.
Every woman had her own story of how she discovered scuba diving, found the MAR Maids, and decided to join us in Roatán.
For many, simply signing up for a training retreat with a group of women they’d never met is a big step outside their comfort zone.
Watching everyone support each other, ask questions, try new things, and celebrate their progress was one of the best parts of the week.
Why Train with Scuba MAR Maids?
There are plenty of places to get scuba certified in Roatán.
Our retreats are designed to offer something different.
We bring women together in a supportive environment where asking questions is encouraged, learning goes beyond the certification requirements, and everyone has the opportunity to grow at their own pace.
We also work with local women dive professionals and businesses, giving our students a chance to experience Roatán from the people who live there.
And because we keep our groups small, there’s plenty of opportunity to learn from each other.
Whether you’re taking your very first breaths underwater or working toward your Rescue Diver certification, our goal is the same: to help you become a safer, more confident, and more independent diver.

What’s Next After a Roatán Training Retreat?
Three days of training go by fast!
There’s a lot to learn, and sometimes the best way to solidify those new skills is simply to go diving.
That’s why we offer a fun diving trip immediately after our retreats.
Students can put their new skills into practice, explore more of Roatán’s beautiful reefs, and enjoy diving without the pressure of completing course requirements.
It’s also a great opportunity to spend more time with the new dive buddies they’ve made during the retreat.
For our Open Water students, they start building experience while training is fresh. For Advanced and Rescue students, it’s an opportunity to put new awareness and confidence to work.
And for everyone, it’s a reminder of why we fell in love with scuba diving in the first place!
Roatán is where our training retreats began, and we love coming back to help more women find their confidence underwater.
