Project Danisha

We want to see more women diving!

Scuba MAR Maids mission is to offer a safe space for women to grow in their diving skills. We also want to see more women in the water, so we are starting this outreach project!

Danisha, the inspiration behind the project (meet her below!), is a Honduran woman living on the island of Roatan.

We met Danisha on our first trip to Anthony’s Key Resort in Roatan where she works in the cafe. In a casual conversation with Maira, Danisha mentioned that she is an advanced diver and would really like to become a divemaster, but its taking her a long time to save enough money to take the training.

Inspired by her love of diving, Maira immediately went about contacting local shops in Roatan to see how we could support Danisha and women like her in her journey to professional diving.

The goal is to help remove the barriers to women becoming dive professionals in the destinations the MAR Maids visit.

Money collected here will help provide dive gear and professional training to women in the areas we do our trips! Right now, we are focusing on training two new divemasters in Roatan, Honduras.

Meet the Candidates

Johana

Born and raised on the island of Utila, Honduras, Johana is a single mom of 4 living and working in Utila with her family. She saw the opportunity to become a divemaster through the Scuba Mar Maids in a Facebook post and immediately applied!

Since March 2024, Johana has come to Roatan when she can to get rescue certified and is now working with Octopus Dive School on her Divemaster certification. She should complete the program by July 2024.

How you can help:

MHT and the Scuba MAR Maids would like to cover the costs of certification for these women. Our partner dive shops Octopus Dive School and Reef Gliders on Roatan are providing the training at or below their cost, but there are still expenses to cover.
