Socorro Liveaboard: Jan 17-26, 2026 Trip Wrap-Up

Diving Socorro with MAR Hosted Trips: Our Revillagigedo Liveaboard Adventure

From January 17–26, a group of 20 MHT Travelers set out on one of the most extraordinary dive adventures in the world: a liveaboard expedition to the Revillagigedo Islands, commonly referred to by divers as “Socorro.”

Hosted by MHT Ambassador Arianna, this 10-day journey took us far off the coast of Baja California and deep into a protected marine wilderness where giant mantas, hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, and dolphins thrive.

This is our favourite trip here at MHT, and we’re going to tell you why!

What Are the Revillagigedo (Socorro) Islands?

The Revillagigedo Islands is an archipelago, a group of volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean, about 400 miles (650 km) southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The archipelago includes four main islands: Socorro, San Benedicto, Roca Partida, and Clarión, with Socorro being the largest and most famous.

But “Revillagigedo” is a mouthful, so most divers simply refer to the area as “Socorro.”

These islands are completely uninhabited and protected as a National Marine Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strict regulations are in place to preserve the ecosystem, limit tourism impact, and protect marine life. There are no hotels, no day trips, and no casual visits. The only way to dive here is by liveaboard (or join the Mexican navy).

This protection is what makes Socorro so special. The islands are a cleaning station, where large pelagic species return again and again to rest, feed, and be cleaned by schools of smaller fish.

Socorro is one of the few places were we can guarantee incredible animal sightings, every dive.

Getting to Socorro: The Liveaboard Journey

Travel to the Revillagigedo Islands is not for the faint of heart. Our trip departed from San José del Cabo, at the southern tip of Baja California Sur.

We always book with Mexico Liveaboards, the only women-owned liveaboard company in the region. The owner is also from Mexico, and hires almost all-Mexican crew.

This brings deep local knowledge and warm hospitality to every trip, and aligns with our sustainable travel goals.

For this expedition, we chartered the brand-new vessel, Quino del Mar.

Divers relax in the cozy lounge area of the Quino el Mar liveaboard, enjoying snacks and conversation between dives

From Cabo San Lucas, we sailed overnight and through the following day, taking approximately 24 to 26 hours to reach the islands, depending on sea conditions. This long crossing is part of the adventure and a reminder of just how remote and untouched this destination truly is.

Unlike many operators that run week-long trips, MAR Hosted Trips offers a full 10-day liveaboard experience. This extended itinerary allows more time at the islands, more dives, and better flexibility with weather and conditions.

It also gives guests time to fully settle into life on board, connect with their fellow travelers, and truly immerse themselves in the experience.

By chartering the entire boat, we were able to manage dive groups and roommates thoughtfully, ensuring everyone felt comfortable, supported, and dive at their skill level.

Why We Love Diving in Socorro

Diving in Socorro is unlike anywhere else in the world. The animal sightings are incomparable.

This is blue water diving, meaning most dives take place in open ocean with few visual references. Instead of drifting along reefs, divers position themselves near underwater pinnacles and cleaning stations, scanning the deep blue for approaching wildlife.

Dive sites are near to the islands, jumping into areas known to be protected from the currents. Unlike reef diving, you can dive the exact same spot several times a day, and see different things every time!

The diving in Socorro is active. Divers observe and follow respectfully, never chasing or disturbing wildlife, but working hard to keep up with them!

Some days that means swimming hard to keep up with dolphins or sharks. Other days, it means hovering calmly as giant mantas circle overhead.

Here are just some of our amazing sightings during this trip:

  • Massive schools of hammerhead sharks
  • Giant Pacific manta rays
  • Baby dolphins
  • White-tip sharks
  • …and TWO WHALE SHARKS

Our MHT Ambassador Arianna described it perfectly:

“There was not a day the ocean did not grace us with majestic mantas, white tips, eels, octopi, tuna, jacks, playful dolphins… and my forever favorite, hammerheads.” – Ari

Seeing not one, but several walls of hammerheads was a dream come true for many on board.

…And then came the whale sharks.

After hearing reports that the world’s largest fish had been spotted in the area, the group crossed their fingers. Soon after, they were rewarded with not one, but two separate whale shark encounters on different dives.

Moments like these are what make Socorro legendary.

About the Diving: Who Is This Trip For?

Socorro is considered advanced diving and is best suited for confident, experienced divers.

Why?

Conditions can include strong currents, surge, and limited visual references. Divers must be comfortable managing themselves in open water while staying aware of depth, air consumption, and no-decompression limits.

To get the most out of this trip, divers should be able to:

  • Swim confidently against current
  • Deploy a DSMB from depth independently
  • Monitor depth and NDL without visual references or being asked by a guide
  • Manage air consumption carefully
  • Stay calm and aware in blue water environments
  • Dive independently without relying on a guide for basic skills

These guidelines are not to restrict divers, but to make sure that you get the absolute most out of this truly adventurous trip. If you are worried about your buoyancy or air use, how will you be able to fully be present and enjoy the amazing things to see?!

With the right skills, divers are rewarded with one of the most spectacular marine ecosystems on Earth.

Why Go to Socorro with MAR Hosted Trips?

A trip to Socorro is a major investment. It is expensive, remote, and logistically complex. It is not something most people will do many times in their lives.

That is exactly why going with the right team matters.

When you travel with MAR Hosted Trips, everything is handled with care:

Because we charter the entire vessel, we are able to create a cohesive, supportive group environment. No one is left to chance when it comes to safety, compatibility, or comfort.

Our ambassador shared:

“What made this adventure the Best. Trip. Ever. was the wonderful crew aboard the new Quino del Mar. Ten amazing crew members spoiled us non-stop. ¡Gracias!”

A Personal Note from Our MHT Expert Ambassador

This expedition was hosted by Ari, one of our expert MHT Ambassadors, and her reflection captures the heart of the experience:

“How lucky was I to go back to my favorite place underwater, this time hosting 19 eager divers from different parts of North America.

Some new to MHT, others long-time travelers, all with one passion in common.

Witnessing several walls of hammerheads was a dream come true.

Then we got even luckier. Not only one, but two whale sharks during two separate dives made our hearts explode with love.

But what made this adventure truly special was the people and the crew who made it all possible.

To all, my love and appreciation. Until the next adventure.”

Her leadership, experience, and passion helped make this journey safe, smooth, and deeply meaningful for everyone involved. Thank you Arianna!

It brought together divers from across North America who shared a love for the ocean and a willingness to push their limits. It connected them to one of the most protected marine environments in the world. And it created memories that will last forever.

If Socorro is on your bucket list, we would love to help you experience it the right way.

With preparation. With support. With the right people beside you.

Tips for Preparing for Socorro

Not sure your skills are ready for this adventure? Here are some great tips and trips to help you advance your skills:

Tips

Get your AOW early

The Advanced Open Water course sets you up to learn faster and reduce bad habits from forming as you are learning to dive.

Check out our dive school for certification retreat dates 👉

Get Deep Certified

The deep specialty is one of the most valuable dive courses. Yes, you will gain “deeper” knowledge of happens to your gear, body, and brain at depth but you’ll also get more practice on deep dives with an instructor.

Every diver’s body reacts differently to depth, it’s only with practice that you can learn your symptoms and how to respond to keep yourself safe.

Dive Different Conditions

Any dive is a great dive to practice, but if you only dive the same area or conditions you will set a ceiling on your skills.

Diving in:

  • Different climates
  • Shore entries
  • Different bodies of water
  • Different temperatures

Every time you change the conditions and the gear you need, you gain more experience!

Trips to Increase Your Skills

Cabo Pulmo – a remote fishing village in Baja California Sur. This is a Medium Difficulty trip and a great introduction to Pacific diving. We also see amazing things like Bull Sharks and

Caribbean Liveaboard – perfect introduction to liveaboard diving. Easy conditions, but will help you get used to the repetitive dives and schedule of liveaboard life!

Bonaire – the diving in Bonaire is beautiful, easy, Caribbean conditions but the skills you need are different!

Bonaire is famous for it’s shore diving, you will learn to be independent and not rely on a divemaster for monitoring your depth, navigation, air use, and gear set up!

If you’re still unsure if Socorro is right for you, send us a message! We are happy to answer your questions.
