One of the things we love about MAR Hosted Trips is giving travelers the flexibility to build the vacation that works best for them.

Not everyone has weeks of vacation to spare, while others are ready to make the most of every travel day. That’s why we created our Trip Links.

Trip Links are shorter adventures that connect to our larger itineraries, allowing travelers to extend their holiday without having to plan another trip from scratch.

This June, we had two Scuba Retreats in Tulum, so it was the perfect opportunity to add a few fun days of diving in Cozumel between the two retreats.

For many divers, it was the perfect balance. Spend a few days simply enjoying the diving before heading back into training. Others joined after the first retreat to unwind before heading home. And some just came to dive with us in Cozumel!

Why Dive Cozumel?

Cozumel is one of the most famous dive destinations in Mexico. Once you visit, you immediately see why.

The island is known for warm water, incredible visibility, and gentle drift dives that allow divers to simply relax and enjoy the reef.

During our three days on the island, conditions were beautiful. Water temperatures hovered around 30°C (86°F), visibility was excellent, and the currents were just strong enough to carry us effortlessly along vibrant coral walls.

Although weather cancelled one morning of diving and our planned sunset cruise, there was still plenty of time to experience why so many divers return to Cozumel year after year.

The reefs were healthy, colourful, and full of life, making every dive enjoyable for both newer and experienced divers alike.

Diving Together

One of the best parts of this Trip Link was the variety of experience levels.

Some guests had hundreds of dives under their belts, while one diver had earned their Open Water certification just a few days earlier during our Tulum Scuba Retreat.

Everyone dove together, supporting one another and sharing the excitement of exploring Cozumel’s famous reefs.

Our dive guides, Mariana & Pedro, quickly became favourites. Mariana’s calm instruction, positive energy, and buoyancy tips had everyone laughing. Several divers were introduced to her famous “credit card system” for improving buoyancy, a lesson that is much easier demonstrated underwater than explained on land!

Pedro loved to share his fish ID knowledge and passion for the island. We learned a lot from him!

Between dives, Ramón and the Reef Riders crew kept everyone well fed with fresh fruit, sandwiches, and his now-famous homemade chocolate cake.

It’s the little touches like these that turn a good dive day into a great one.

Exploring Downtown Cozumel

Our home for the trip was the Porto Libre Hotel, conveniently located in downtown Cozumel.

Its location made it easy to walk everywhere. Shops, cafés, restaurants, the ferry terminal, and the waterfront were all just a few minutes away.

As always, food became an important part of the adventure.

Some of the group’s favourites included:

  • Chicken mole tacos at Guisadas
  • Peanut butter coffee and espresso tonic from Coz Coffee Roasters
  • Carrot paletas from Michoacán
  • Snout-to-tail tacos at Taquería Díaz
  • Authentic Mayan cuisine at Ix Kool, where several travelers returned more than once during the trip

Sharing recommendations quickly became part of the fun, and every evening seemed to end with someone saying, “You have to try this place tomorrow.”

Better Together

Could you dive Cozumel on your own?

Absolutely.

But there is something special about diving with a group.

You always have a great buddy. Someone to celebrate your favourite dive with. A table full of people to share dinner and swap stories each evening. Local recommendations are already sorted out, and the dive logistics are taken care of so you can simply enjoy being there.

That’s exactly what MHT aims to do.

We take an already incredible destination and make it even better by sharing it with people who love diving as much as you do.

Whether you’re adding a few extra days before a retreat or extending your holiday into a full week, Cozumel is the perfect place to slow down, enjoy world-class diving, and make the most of your time in Mexico.
